Burneside, on the River Kent, has a population of about 2000. The village is home to James Cropper PLC paper mills which have been making paper since 1845. The mill shop is a 5 minutes walk from the station.
The village is also home to St. Oswald's church which dates from 1647 and the Bryce Institute which is the venue for local social events. Burneside Hall lies on the edge of the village and has a 14th century pele tower and barmkyn.
Burneside is on the route of the Dalesway walk.
